Dear NHBB & USGO/IGB Students, Coaches, Parents, and Teams,

Thanks for coming to the 2018 Minnesota History Bee and Bowl at Burnsville High School! Thanks to everyone who assisted with reading and scorekeeping throughout the day, and to Les Moffitt for his help with the hosting arrangements as well as directing the tournament.

Congratulations to Wayzata A in the Varsity, Mounds View in the JV, and Wayzata Central A in the Middle School division, for winning the titles in the History Bowl! Congratulations also go to Matthew Fischer in the Varsity, Shardul Rao of Mounds View, and Sam Buan of Wayzata Central for their victories in the Varsity, JV and Middle School History Bees! I hope that you and your students enjoyed the competition; if you have any feedback on how things went or questions about the day, please just let me know.

Please note that any team with a .500 record or above in the prelims or a playoff win qualifies for Nationals. Students who finish in the top half in the Bee prelims in their division qualify for Nationals there as well. Students on champion Bowl teams and those in the top 25% of the Bee (either in prelims or overall) qualify for the 2018 International History Olympiad next summer in Berlin (July 14-22). Students scoring a 75 or above on the IGB/USGO exam also qualify for the 2018 International Geography Bee World Championships in Berlin (July 11-17).
The stats have also been posted to our respective websites. Information on Nationals for the US History Bee and the United States Geography Olympiad / International Geography Bee for those who qualified, is available on those websites.

Our 2018 National Championships will be held on April 27-29 in April in Arlington, VA and Washington, DC. We hope to see you all there! Registration for Nationals is now open here through early April. Please email ASAP if you plan to attend.

Thanks for your continued support of our competitions, and best of luck at all your remaining competitions this year!

Best regards,

Marshall Mullins

Note 1: Any team that will be competing at this tournament is eligible to apply for a wild card bid to our 2018 National History Bowl National Championships on April 28-29, as this will be the only tournament in the area this year (which is taking place just 3 weeks in advance of Nationals). Wild card bids are not granted automatically, but teams that can show that they have a solid chance of posting a 3-2 record at this tournament will have their bids granted. Any team interested in this option should email director@historybowl.com with a list of their most recent all-subject quiz bowl tournament results, any results from NHBB competitions in the past two years, and any other supporting information. For individual events, students must still qualify, either at the tournament on April 7, or by doing exams with a school proctor for the US History Bee and the US Geography Olympiad / International Geography Bee. Note that if your wild card bid is granted, you still must compete at this tournament in order for the bid to be eligible (i.e. the bid is still good even if you go 2-3 or worse in your matches, but not if you avoid the tournament altogether).

Note 2: During the lunch break, we will offer the National Qualifying Exams for the US Geography Olympiad / International Geography Bee (one exam serves to qualify students for the National Championships of both competitions) and the US History Bee. Both exams cost $10 and can be signed up for on the day of the tournament; pre-registration is not required. Students planning on taking one exam are recommended not to leave during the lunch break (they can bring a lunch or have a teammate get lunch for them). Students planning on taking both exams should definitely plan on staying at the school for lunch.
