Congratulations to Saratoga A and Saratoga C, the 2013 Northern California History Bowl Varsity and Junior Varsity Champions! This year’s tournament featured 10 Varsity and 6 JV teams who came to our competition on March 2 at San Leandro High School. Many thanks to Marc Gordon and his team of students and volunteers at San Leandro for great hosting arrangements and their help in hosting for the third straight year.
There were many great matches over the course of the tournament; Saratoga, Escobar, and Bellarmine, established themselves as the teams to beat early on in the JV, while Saratoga C, Bellarmine B, and Challenger-Berryessa Middle School were the three teams to beat in the JV. In the playoffs, host school San Leandro scored their highest finish to date by making the semis over Saratoga B, while Bellarmine had to rally from a 40 point deficit entering the 4th quarter in their quarterfinal match against a strong Homestead team. That set up a showdown against Escobar, which Escobar won 310-190. Escobar, then in the final match met Saratoga A, after their victory over San Leandro. Though Escobar jumped out to a 70-20 lead, Saratoga took the lead in the second quarter, swept their 3rd quarter, and scored a few 30 point powers in the 4th quarter to reach a 320-190 final score. In the JV, Bellarmine hung on for a 240-180 against Challenger-Berryessa, one of the strongest middle school teams in the country led by phenom and JV Bee winner Bryant Cong. Saratoga, however, then won the final 260-210 on the basis of a very strong second quarter.
Bellarmine, Saratoga, Escobar, and Challenger-Berryessa all have the potential to go deep at Nationals, and San Leandro and Homestead could post strong finishes too. Thanks to NHBB Board of Advisors Member Gaius Stern, 2012 Northern California Varsity History Bee Champion, Ankit Aggarwal, and Nolwenn Leon Madden for their help throughout the day.
