11 teams competed in the 2013 Central Florida Winter History Bowl on Saturday, February 2 at Largo High School. There were six varsity and two junior varsity teams in the field; the JV teams were incorporated into the varsity division for scheduling purposes. Also joining the fray were three middle school teams. Those teams played a double round robin schedule, with Terrace Community Middle School going through undefeated and winning the division.
The high school competition was very balanced. There were many games decided by 50 points or less, including one semifinal and the final itself. H. B. Plant High School’s two teams were the top two seeds after the 5 preliminary rounds, with the B team going 5-0 and the A team going 4-1. The remaining semifinalists were Riverview B and the one-man team from Hillsborough, both going 3-2. Just missing out were Shorecrest, our November host, and Riverview A at 2-3. The single player Freedom JV team was 1-4, while Largo rounded out the field at 0-5.
The two semifinals saw Plant B play Hillsborough JV; Plant advanced to the final by winning each quarter of the match en route to a 260-150 result. The other semifinal came down to the last question as Plant A managed to overturn a 130-70 halftime deficit, but could not hold on down the stretch as Riverview B won 220-210.
The final, Plant B v Riverview B, went back and forth throughout. Plant led 50-40 after the first quarter, but Riverview took advantage of bonuses in the second quarter — much as they had throughout the tournament — to take a 100-70 lead into the third quarter. Plant narrowly missed a sweep of its lightning round, but managed to close the gap to ten points, 160-150. The fourth quarter went in Plant’s favor, 50-20, and so did the championship as a result. Final score: 200-180.
