Eastern Georgia

The inaugural Eastern Georgia History Bee and Bowl was held on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at Cedar Shoals High School in Athens, GA and it turned out to be a great way to kickoff NHBB’s tournaments in the South this school year. Both Varsity and JV saw historic firsts – in the Varsity division, Ricky Yoder, playing on his own for Wesleyan, became the first player to ever win a Varsity level History Bowl without any teammates! This is truly a great accomplishment, and one wonders how Wesleyan will do at Nationals when Ricky (we presume) will have some assistance.
Meanwhile in the JV, The Westminster Schools of Atlanta sent an all-middle school team led by phenom Nilai Sarda that won the high school Junior Varsity tournament! While not the first school to accomplish this feat (Johnson County MS of Paintsville, KY did the same last year), Nilai became the first to pull of the JV Bee / Bowl sweep as a middle schooler on an all-middle school team!
Varsity Finalist, Flowery Branch as well as Jonesboro, Cedar Shoals, Bleckley County, and Fulton Science Academy also all qualified a team or teams for our National Championships, though all schools will have additional opportunities to qualify at our Georgia State Championships on March 17 at Ola High School. We hope to see them there, and then in Washington in April!
Thanks to host Cedar Shoals HS and coach Robin Richards for assisting with hosting and logistics, and for helping us finish ahead of schedule!
