Eastern Georgia

Congratulations to Athens Academy (Varsity) and Westminster (Junior Varsity) for winning the 2012 Eastern Georgia History Bowl! Thanks to Robin Richards and Cedar Shoals High School for hosting our competition once again. In the Varsity Division, we had an exciting competition with many close games; including one semifinal that later was found to have a scoring error that could have affected the outcome of the match. In the end, both teams from that semifinal (Wesleyan and Cedar Shoals) did get a chance to play Athens Academy (who won both finals matches); thus Athens Academy is clearly the undisputed champion; with Wesleyan and Cedar Shoals named co-finalists. Other noteworthy performances were turned in by Ricky Yoder from Wesleyan, who came within a match of repeating as solo champion for the second year in a row; Collins Hill for going 5-0 in the prelims, and Cedar Shoals for going 2-3 in the morning, yet turning it around in the playoffs to become a “co-finalist.”
In the JV Division, NHBB history was made as Nilai Sarda of Westminster and Garrett Johnston of River Ridge High School both played solo – and both made the finals! We’ve never had two one-player teams meet in a final before until this tournament. In the final, Garrett and Nilai were tied through three quarters before Nilai pulled away for a 240-160 win in the final.
Congratulations to all teams who made the playoffs and who qualified for our National Championships next April 27-28 in Washington, DC and Arlington, VA. We will be getting in touch with everyone who qualified in the coming weeks with more information on Nationals. Registration will likely open in late November or early December and will run through early April 2013. We hope to see all teams who qualified there!
