Eastern Kentucky

13 teams participated in the 2013 Eastern Kentucky History Bowl at Johnson Central High School on February 9, 2013.  After five preliminary rounds, seven teams had qualified for our national championships on April 27-28 in Arlington, VA and Washington, D.C.. Of those seven, two were middle school teams. Paintsville Middle School A and Johnson County Middle School advanced to the middle school divsion final as well as earning their national bids. In that final, Johnson County overturned an earlier loss to Paintsville A to win the middle school division by a final score of 240-150.

In the junior varsity division, three teams competed alongside the varsity teams. Two of those won a game; those teams, Southwestern and Blazer B, played a divisional final that Southwestern won 270-200.

The varsity division had seven teams, and five qualified for nationals. Long-time NHBB presence Menifee County posted an undefeated record. The hosts went 4-1, as did Blazer A. Piarist and Pikeville went 3-2. Menifee advanced to the semifinals directly as the #1 seed. Corbin earned a national bid by upsetting Blazer A with a huge 170-point effort in the fourth quarter. Piarist and Johnson Central also advanced to the semifinals. In the round of four, Menifee defeated Piarist and Johnson Central came back from a first quarter deficit to beat Corbin. The final was another comeback affair. Johnson Central led 60-20 after the first quarter, but Menifee chipped away at that led by 20 in the second quarter, 10 more in the third quarter, then won the fourth quarter 90-50 to win the title 270-240.

Many thanks to Brenda Porter, Andrew Salyer, and Johnson Central High School for hosting and directing the tournament! We hope to see all of our national qualfiers at the national championship in Arlington and Washington this April!
