Congratulations to Berkeley Prep and Freedom High School – Varsity and Junior Varsity winners respectively in the 2012 Central Florida History Bowl!
On Saturday, November 10, 14 teams gathered in Landy Hall on the campus of Shorecrest Prep to face off in the first-ever Central Florida History Bowl. The host school entered 4 teams into the varsity division, while Berkeley Prep of Tampa put 4 into the JV division. They weren’t just there to make up the numbers, though — the teams from both schools were very skilled, even though this was the first competition for everyone.
An early showdown between Shorecrest’s leading team (the B team) and Riverview went the hosts way; they were the first to punch their ticket to Washington, DC along with Berkeley. Riverview rebounded from the loss to win one of its final two matches to join Shorecrest, Berkeley, and H. B. Plant as national qualifiers. Plant qualified on the last question of the last preliminary match, beating Berkeley to get their third win.
In the JV division, Maya of Freedom HS was joined by one of last year’s National History Bee Middle School Competition semifinalists, Alec from Hillsborough IB, to fill out the JV division. The two lost their first match to Shorecrest by 10, but would get their revenge in the final after defeating all of Berkeley’s squads.
The varsity playoffs held to seed, and Shorecrest — playing in their history teacher (and tournament host) Ron Heller’s room — couldn’t bring the home advantage to bear as Berkeley held on to take the title.
Many thanks to Mr. Heller and all of the volunteers from Shorecrest, Berkeley, Plant, and Riverview for making this event successful. We hope to see everyone who qualified in Arlington and Washington on April 27!
