Florida – State Championships

Congratulations to Ransom Everglades School for sweeping the Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Middle School titles at the 2013 Florida History Bowl State Championships! Our tournament, held on March 16, featured 40 teams from throughout the Sunshine State. Many thanks to Barry Briganti and Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School for hosting our tournament for the second straight year.

24 teams participated in the varsity division of the competition, fighting for three preliminary wins that would qualify them to our national championships at Arlington, VA and Washington, DC on April 27-28. 16 would earn playoff bids after five preliminary rounds. The top four seeds were Ransom Everglades A and B, Cypress Bay, and South Fork A. All four of those teams would fight their way to undefeated records, then shrug off challenges in the octofinals and quarterfinals to reach the semis. In the #1 vs #4 matchup, Ransom Everglades A used a 120-point second quarter to put South Fork away, winning 380-70. In the other semifinal, Cypress Bay broke open the game with a third quarter sweep and stealing 30 points off Ransom’s rebounds for good measure, running away to a 310-150 victory. In the final, Ransom A led early and went wire-to-wire, winning three of the four quarters and the title 300-160.

In the 12-team JV division, 8 teams would qualify for the playoffs. Of those eight, four were from Ransom Everglades. Palmetto had two representatives, while Archimedean and the hosts, Chaminade-Madonna, finished out the single-elimination field. The only upset by seed was Palmetto C, the fifth seed, defeating #4 seed Ransom G. Everything else held to form, and Ransom D played Ransom E in the final. It was a close first quarter, 40-20, but the second quarter proved decisive. Ransom D won the division over Ransom E, 200-130.

In the four-team middle school division, Ransom Everglades completed its trifecta by running out as undisputed and undefeated division winners.
