The National History Bee and Bowl held the inaugural Guam History Bowl at St. John’s School in Tumon Bay, Guam on Saturday, December 10, 2011 and a great time was had by all. The competition featured 3 Varsity and 7 JV teams, and after five preliminary rounds, Father Duenas and Harvest Christian had the top two teams for both the Varsity and JV divisions. Father Duenas’ JV team was actually tied exactly with St. John’s JV with 3-2 records and 970 points, so a tiebreak quarter was played, in which Father Duenas won out 40-20.
In the finals, Harvest Christian took the JV while Father Duenas prevailed in the Varsity to become our first ever Guam History Bowl champions!
Thanks so much to all teams who came, I was thrilled to be able to come to Guam to direct our tournament. Next year, we will certainly have another tournament on Guam, and hopefully at least 20 teams, especially as we look to inaugurate a separate middle school division. Thanks to Bishop Baumgartner and Luis Untalan for being brave enough to compete against the high school teams this year!
If any Guam teams are interested in our National Championships on April 27-29 in Washington, DC, please contact me and I will do whatever I can to help you make arrangements so you can come join us at Nationals.
Thanks so much to everyone at St. John’s for helping out with hosting and logistics – everyone who took part, not least myself, really appreciates it!
Best regards,
David Madden
