Congratulations to ‘Iolani A and ‘Iolani F, the Varsity and JV winners of the 2013 Hawaii History Bowl! Our competition was held on Saturday, February 9 at ‘Iolani in Honolulu, and featured 12 teams from four schools, and a great time was had by all who attended. Over the course of the tournament, three ‘Iolani Varsity and two ‘Iolani Junior Varsity teams qualified for Nationals, as did Island Pacific Academy, in their NHBB debut. Thanks to Kapolei High School and Kalakaua Middle School for coming and competing too. In the middle school competition, ‘Iolani Middle won three games over Kalakaua, the only other middle school team there, and was thus declared the champion at lunch.
A big thank you goes out to John Bickel of ‘Iolani for his help in organizing the hosting arrangements, to Kenneth Lee of ‘Iolani’s team for his help with outreach, and to History Education Hawaii led by Professor Jeffrey Bingham Mead. In addition to spearheading outreach and public relations efforts related to the tournament, History Education Hawaii and Professor Mead generously covered lunch for all participants which was greatly appreciated by all. Thanks as well to all of our volunteers and readers, and all the parents and teachers who supported our tournament!
We hope to see all teams who qualified at our National Championships at the end of April in Washington, DC and Arlington, VA, and look forward to holding multiple tournaments in Hawaii in the 2013-2014 school year as more schools begin to field History Bowl teams in the 50th state! Thanks to all for coming for a great tournament!
