Kansas

10 teams participated in the 2013 Kansas History Bowl at Chanute High School on Saturday, February 23. After a brief delay to account for icy roads, the preliminary rounds began. The best game of the preliminary stage came when Thomas Jefferson Independent answered the last tossup to beat Junction City 250-240. After the first five rounds in the varsity division, Thomas Jefferson Independent was undefeated followed by Junction City, Iola A, and Chanute A. The top three had already qualified for our national championships on April 27-28 in Arlington, VA and Washington, D.C. by winning three or more games. Chanute would have to upset the #1 seed to earn their bid, but that was not to be. Thomas Jefferson Independent advanced to the final with a 350-90 win over the hosts, while Iola did manage to overturn their Round 5 loss to Junction City in convincing fashion. After that 300-160 victory, Iola took a 30-0 early first quarter lead over the team from Missouri, but lost it by the end of the first quarter. Good bonus conversion extended the lead at the end of the first half to 140-60, and the final score was 290-150.

In the combined junior varsity/middle school division, Rolla dominated the Iola teams to finish 6-0, qualify for nationals, and win the division. Iola’s JV team earned the other nationals bid.

Many thanks to Mike Bruner and Chanute High School for hosting! We hope to see all of the qualified teams in Arlington and Washington this April!
