Maryland

Congratulations to Richard Montgomery A and Richard Montgomery C, the champions of the 2013 Maryland History Bowl for Varsity and Junior Varsity, and to Burleigh Manor Middle School, our inaugural Maryland Middle School History Bowl champions! Our competition, held on Saturday, January 5 at Mt. St. Joseph High School in Baltimore, featured 31 teams in action across all three divisions – our largest regional or state tournament so far this school year. Richard Montgomery’s A team established their credentials as a national title contender, with a very impressive performance, including over 2200 points in the preliminary rounds. They ended up playing their B team in the final, who managed to overcome their 7th seed status in the playoffs to make the final match after notching three wins in the playoffs. Quince Orchard and Centennial A were the two Varsity semifinalists and also had great tournaments too, while Charter, Gonzaga, Mt. St. Joseph, and Nandua also qualified for Nationals.
In the JV, Centennial C took a lead into the final quarter of the championship match, but Richard Montgomery C scored a number of 20 and 30 point powers to come away with the win. Both teams looked very impressive, and have the potential to go far at Nationals too. Special mention in the JV Division also goes to Park School for fielding a “team” of a single ninth-grader, who nevertheless won a match in her NHBB high school debut. Charter B and Centennial E were the two JV semifinalists and Richard Montgomery D also earned a Nationals berth by going 3-2.
In the middle school, our second middle school division of the year featured 5 teams. 2 were from Centennial’s feeder school, Burleigh Manor, and 3 from St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Harrisburg, PA, which has the distinction of having the greatest number of students in their school (over 50%!) of any school in the country on their History Bowl team. The top teams from each school were very evenly matched throughout, but Burleigh Manor managed a close victory in the final match to come away with the title.
Thanks to Ryan Folmer and Mt. St. Joseph for hosting a great tournament for the second straight year, to Raynell Cooper and Nolwenn Leon Madden for directing, to Mr. and Mrs. Cooper for their help, and to everyone who read, kept score, or otherwise helped out. Special mention goes to Centennial who brought a great crew of 7 readers who helped greatly throughout the day. We hope to see all teams who qualified at our National Championships in the spring, as well as at our remaining area tournaments over the next few months! Thanks to all teams who came for a great day!
