14 teams participated in the 2013 Massachusetts State History Bowl at Everett High School on January 26, 2013. Of those teams, 9 played in the Varsity division while 5 played in the Junior Varsity.
After the five preliminary rounds, half of the field had qualified for the national championship tournament, to be held in Washington, D.C. and Arlington, VA on April 27-28. Among the JV teams, Lexington B and King Phillip were the top 2 and the ones who qualified for nationals; they faced off in their divisional championship, where Lexington B beat King Phillip for the second time on the day, winning 280-150 to complement their 270-170 win the round before.
Eight of the nine Varsity teams advanced to quarterfinals; of those eight, only Pioneer Charter caused an upset according to seed by beating Tantasqua. The other quarterfinalists were Everett B, Quincy C, and Quincy B. In the semifinals, Lexington advanced with a 350-70 beating of Pioneer Charter that included a 100-point second quarter; Quincy A overcame a halftime deficit to beat Everett A 200-170. In the final, #1 seed Lexington beat #2 seed Quincy A 260-150 on the back of a 100-point effort in the third quarter.
Thanks to Everett HS and Kelly Dwyer for hosting, Janine Simard for directing, and we hope to see all the qualified teams in Washington and Arlington this April 27-28 for the national championships!
