Northern New Jersey

Congratulations to Hunter College High School and to Bergen Academies; the Varsity and JV winners of the 2012 Northern New Jersey History Bowl! This tournament featured the strongest field in NHBB history, with a number of teams that have a chance of going deep in the playoffs, or even winning the National Championships. For the second year in a row, the Varsity final came down to an epic battle between Hunter and St. Joseph’s. Last year, St. Joe’s, as the two seed, won on the penultimate question. This year, Hunter was the two seed, and it came down to the last question, which Hunter took for the win. Earlier, Hunter survived a 300-270 scare from High Tech (who had earlier defeated Hunter by that exact score in a scrimmage match). Bergen Academies Varsity team rounded out the Varsity semifinalists.
Other items of note include Ranney and Mountain Lakes making the playoffs in their NHBB debuts, and playing a great octofinal match. In the JV division, St. Joe’s also made the final match, which like the Varsity match came down to the very end. Also, Pearls Hawthorne Middle School made history by becoming the first team to enter the high school division after having competed in the middle school division of the Bee – and qualifying for Nationals through finishing in the top half of the Junior Varsity field!
A big thank you to everyone in Ridgewood for their help in putting this tournament together, including Rohit Prakash, Bob Borders, Andrew Ibendahl, Alan Blayne, Alan Matlick, Joe from Long Island, Lisa Nicolaou, Jane Rymer, Brian McGuinness, and the Ridgewood High School custodial staff and administration. We look forward to seeing all teams who qualified at our National Championships in April, and also at our New Jersey State Championships later in February!
Thanks to all teams for coming and competing!
