Congratulations to Irvington A, Bethlehem B, and Benjamin Franklin – Varsity, JV, and Middle School Champions respectively in the 2012 Lower Hudson History Bowl! Our tournament was held on December 15 at White Plains High School and featured 14 Varsity, 8 JV and 4 Middle School Division teams. One middle school division team, however, comprised a group of intrepid fifth graders from NHBB’s hometown of Tenafly, NJ! They made history as the first elementary school team to ever enter a History Bowl and performed great against students much older than they were.
In the Varsity division, while Horace Greeley put up a great challenge in the final match, Irvington A showed not only that they were clearly the top team in the field, but established themselves as a team to watch at Nationals, led by 2012 National History Bee national finalist and team captain Alec Vulfson. Scarsdale, Greens Farms, Bethlehem, Eastchester, White Plains, and Ardsley also all qualified their teams through to both the playoffs and Nationals on the basis of 3-2 records or better.
In the JV, the two man team from Bethlehem of Ben Weinstein and Eric Wolfsberg, which traveled 2.5 hours to the tournament, was the top team throughout the day, winning over a strong Greens Farms team 280-170 in the finals. Ben and Eric also squared off in the final portion of the JV History Bee, capping a great day for their team.
In the Middle and Elementary School division, aside from Team Tenafly’s performance, Pearls Hawthorne and Ben Franklin were the top two teams during the prelims, but split their 2 matches together. That set up a one game final won by BF, led by captain David Song, one of the top scorers in the country at last year’s Middle School National Championship Tournament run by all-subject quizbowl tournament organizer, NAQT. Owen Vautsinas-Klose from Nyack, performed great in the Bowl as well as a one-man team, and qualified for JV Nationals in the Bee.
Thanks to White Plains High School for hosting and to Les Roby, the White Plains National Honors Society, and to our numerous volunteer helpers throughout the day who ensured a great tournament. We hope to see everyone who qualified at our National Championships in Washington, DC and Arlington, VA at the end of April, and at our area B set and A set tournaments in early 2013!
