Congratulations to Solon and Lowellville for winning the Varsity and JV Divisions respectively of the 2012 Northeast Ohio History Bowl!
18 teams converged at Western Reserve K-12 school on Saturday, October 27 to compete in the third annual Northeast Ohio History Bowl. 14 teams competed in the varsity division, while 4 contested the junior varsity division. Early on, Solon showed its dominance and experience by posting scores in the 400s. Warren G. Harding kept pace, matching Solon win for win, but not matching their scoring. Local teams fared better than last year; Boardman and Sebring led the Mahoning County delegation into the playoffs.
The Junior Varsity division was dominated by a single player, Cole Baird of Lowellville. After defeating Sebring twice and Boardman D twice, in addition to Boardman C, the division was done. Boardman D qualified to nationals with a 3-2 record. By mutual consent of all teams, no sixth round was played.
On the Varsity side, there were two upsets (by seed) in the quarterfinals — Hawken getting revenge on Harding for a preliminary round loss, and Sebring falling to Boardman. Solon and Beachwood progressed through their quarterfinals as expected. In the semis, Solon shot out to an early lead and didn’t look back, while Beachwood and Hawken battled back and forth, but the Bison came out on top.
In the final match, Solon used their teamwork to answer all of the bonus questions put to them, and that turned out to be most of the difference in a 260-210 decision.
