South Florida

Congratulations to Archimedean Upper Conservatory – Varsity and Junior Varsity Champions of the 2012 South Florida Fall History Bowl! 24 teams (16 Varsity, 8 JV) competed at Archimedean on Saturday, November 10 in a great tournament. From the opening meeting outside in the courtyard in the Florida sun to the exciting final matches of the day, a great time was had by all teams. I’d like to personally thank Mr. Demetrios Demopoulos and Mr. Todd Yamron, Archimedean’s principal and coach, for all their help in hosting the event, and to the numerous volunteers who sold food, helped with set up, read questions, and made the tournament possible. Special thanks in particular go to Steve Frappier and Ransom Everglades for providing seven readers (and six teams) and to Barry Briganti and Chaminade Madonna for setting an NHBB record in bringing 8 teams to a tournament!
In the competition itself, Ransom Everglades dominated the preliminaries with the top 2 Varsity and top 3 JV teams. But right behind them in both divisions was Archimedean, who in both the Varsity and Junior Varsity triumphed over two Ransom teams in the semifinals and finals in exciting matches in front of a sizable audience. Congratulations also to NHBB newcomers Cypress Bay for placing two Varsity teams in the playoffs, to Chaminade for making the Varsity semis, to Western High School and Coach Kristine Frailing for their 4-1 performance in the prelims, their best ever at a History Bowl, and to Palmetto Middle School who won two matches against high school JV teams! Thanks also to Princeton Christian and Coral Springs for coming and competing too.
We hope to see all teams who qualified at our National Championships in Washington, DC and Arlington, VA on April 26-28, and also at our two other South Florida area tournaments at Ransom Everglades on January 12, and our Florida State Championships at Chaminade Madonna in Hollywood on March 16!
