8 teams participated in the 2013 New Hampshire History Bowl on Saturday, February 23 at Hanover High School. All teams were in the varsity classification. After the five preliminary rounds, four bids had been earned to our national championship on April 27-28 in Arlington, VA and Washington, D.C.. Those bids went to Contoocook Valley, whose A team finished 3-2; Manchester Central, finishing 4-1 having only signed up for the tournament after the original postponement; Hanover, the hosts, that went 4-1; and Plymouth Regional, the only 5-0 team in the preliminary session. Plymouth Regional recorded a second straight win over Contoocook Valley A in the semfinals by a score of 400-120. In the other semifinal, Hanover advanced with a 310-170 triumph over Manchester Central.
The final was the first this season to be decided in overtime. The first quarter was deadlocked at 50. In the second quarter, Plymouth pulled ahead by 40. Hanover pulled back within 20 after the third quarter, then closed the other 20 points of the gap in the fourth quarter to send the final to a single-question tiebreaker. hanover answered it, thus winning the title by a score of 290-270.
Many thanks to William Murphy and Hanover for hosting, as well as Kevin Commo and Kiran McCormick for acting as co-tournament directors! We hope to see all the qualified teams at our national championships this April in Arlington and Washington!
