Washington – State Championships

16 teams came to Klahowya Secondary School on February 16, 2013 for the Washington State Championship History Bowl. In the Junior Varsity and Middle School (combined) division, two schools fielded six teams that played a single round robin over five preliminary rounds. West Sound A completed an undefeated preliminary section by defeating Klahowya C 260-40, then beat Klahowya B for the second time that day in the JV Final by a count of 220-120. The middle school final saw West Sound ride a 50-point third quarter performance to an 80-40 victory.

The varsity division featured ten teams. Six would qualify for the national championships that will be held on April 27 and 28 in Arlington, VA and Washington, DC. Finishing with 3-2 records and qualifying were St. George’s, the Eastern Washington champion, and Klahowya A. Rounding out the top four were top seed Pope John Paul II, who fell in the semifinals after winning their first six games; and Holy Names C, whose only preliminary loss was to Pope John Paul II.

The final featured Thomas Jefferson against Holy Names B. It started close, Thomas Jefferson holding a 10 point lead after the first quarter, then was blown open by a 100-0 second quarter performance by the Jefferson team. An even third quarter preceded a 60-10 fourth quarter, and the final score was Jefferson 260, Holy Names 100.

Thanks to Jeff Kreifels and Klahowya Secondary School for hosting us once again, and we hope to see all of the qualified teams in Arlington, VA and Washington, DC this April!
