8 teams participated in theĀ 2013 Wisconsin History Bowl at Beloit Memorial High School on Saturday, March 9. Four teams earned bids to our national championships on April 27 and 28 in Arlington, Virginia and Washington, D.C. at this tournament: Williams Bay A, which went 3-2 in the five preliminary rounds; D. C. Everest, which had four wins after five rounds; Illinois Math and Science Academy (IMSA), a JV-eligible team that went undefeated; and Templeton Middle School, which went 3-2 and is now doubly qualified, securing a bid to our Middle School Bowl National Championship on May 18 and 19, also in Arlington, VA.
The first semifinal saw IMSA open a large lead in the first half, particularly in the second quarter, then hold it through the second half to win 250-180 over the #4 seed Williams Bay A. In the second semifinal, Templeton Middle kept it close early, trailing 60-40 after the first quarter. Having tied the second and third quarters, D.C. Everest was overwhelmed on the final eight tossups by a 120-20 score and succumbed to Templeton. The final score was 270-190.
The two youngest teams in the tournament then contested a back-and-forth final. Templeton led after the first quarter by ten, but only scored ten in the second quarter and fell behind 120-60. Taking advantage of the first choice of categories in the third quarter, the lead was cut to 30 points going into the fourth quarter, but IMSA proved too good to catch, winning that quarter 100-20 and the championship 280-170.
Many thanks to Matt Flynn and Beloit Memorial High School for hosting as well as Jessica Roe for directing the tournament! We hope to see all the qualified teams at our national championships in Arlington this April (and May for middle schools!)
