Spring History Bowl Regionals (updated 3/1/21)
International Academic Competitions is pleased to announce that this year’s A Set tournaments will take place in the form of online Team vs. Team events. For Team vs. Team, the Spring Regionals (A Set) will take place in April. Teams will continue to be limited to six players, with only four playing at a time. All matches will be played online using Google Meet and our online buzzer system, COBA-cc.
Spring Team vs Team Events
Registrations for the Spring Online Bowl Team vs. Team Events is now open, and will close Wednesday, March 31!
While teams in the Fall History Bowl League were grouped by geography and played over 5 weeks, the Spring Regionals will look almost exactly like Winter Regionals. The Spring Regionals will be made up of 3 separate tournament dates during a two-week period in February. Each tournament will have 5 rounds of preliminary play running from 11:00am EST until 4:00pm EST, then have a hour and a half break, after which the playoffs will begin at 5:30 EST. The number of teams that will advance to playoffs will depend on the size of the field.
All of these tournaments will use our A Set of questions, so if you participate in one Spring Regional date, you cannot participate in another. Additionally, if a school has more than one team that wants to participate, all teams must compete on the same day. All schools are welcome; you do not have to have played in the Fall or Winter League to play in the Spring Regionals. As usual, each tournament will have both a Varsity and Junior Varsity division.
Date | Divisions | Event Notes |
---|---|---|
Sunday, 04/11 | Varsity & JV (Standard) | Open to all teams. |
Saturday, 04/17 | Varsity & JV (Expert) | Open to all teams, but aimed at providing a more competitive environment for stronger teams. This generally includes teams that had a winning prelim record in Fall League or 2020 Nationals, or consistently score 250+ points per game in NHBB events. |
Saturday, 04/17 | Middle & Elementary | Open to all Middle School & Elementary division teams. Middle School & Elementary division teams are welcome to play in other Junior Varsity tournaments, but are encouraged to play in their regularly-assigned division. |
Saturday, 04/24 | Varsity & JV (Standard) | Open to all teams. |
Saturday, 04/24 | US Academic Bowl (Middle and Elementary only) | Open to all Middle School & Elementary division teams. |
Note: IAC reserves the right to re-assign teams across events with prior notice in order to balance field sizes.
Format
All bowl matches will be played following normal NHBB rules with a modified third quarter, where lightning rounds are played with bonus timing and immediate bouncebacks.
Nationals Qualification
Teams that have a winning record in preliminary play, or win a game in playoffs will qualify for the National Championships of the National History Bowl, which will be held in May 2021. Further information regarding the 2021 National Championships will be announced in the spring.
Awards
The top teams in each division will receive plaques, which will be shipped after the event concludes.
Cost
History Bowl and Academic Bowl Regional team registrations will cost $100 per team, with the opportunity for a discount for teams that provide moderators (who would read for other teams, not their own, and subject to IAC’s discretion and approval). Payments can be made in the form of a check or online with a credit card. Registration forms are posted below.
