Winter History Bowl Regionals (updated 1/2/21)

International Academic Competitions is pleased to announce that this year’s B Set and A Set tournaments will take place in the form of online Team vs. Team and Team vs. Packet events. For Team vs. Team, the Winter Regionals (B Set) and Spring Regionals (A Set) will take place in February and April, respectively. Teams will continue to be limited to six players, with only four playing at a time. All matches will be played online using Google Meet and our online buzzer system, COBA-cc.

Winter Team vs Team Events

Registrations for the Winter Online Bowl Team vs. Team Events are open, and will close January 30, 2021. The Spring Events will begin play in April 2021. Exact registration and competition dates for Spring have not yet been announced. The structure of the Spring League will resemble the structure of the Winter League. If you have any questions please email league@iacompetitions.com.

While teams in the Fall History Bowl League were grouped by geography and played over 5 weeks, the Winter Regionals will look a lot more like our in-person tournaments last year. The Winter Regionals will be made up of 4 separate tournament dates during a two-week period in February. Each tournament will have 5 rounds of preliminary play running from 11:00am EST until 4:00pm EST, then have a hour and a half break, after which the playoffs will begin at 5:30 EST. The number of teams that will advance to playoffs will depend on the size of the field.

All of these tournaments will use our B Set of questions, so if you participate in one Winter Regional date, you cannot participate in another. Additionally, if a school has more than one team that wants to participate, all teams must compete on the same day. All schools are welcome; you do not have to have played in the Fall League to play in the Winter or Spring Regionals. As usual, each tournament will have both a Varsity and Junior Varsity division.

Date Divisions Event Notes
Saturday, 02/13 Varsity & JV (Standard) Open to all teams.
Monday, 02/15 Varsity & JV (Expert) Open to all teams, but aimed at providing a more competitive environment for stronger teams. This generally includes teams that had a winning prelim record in Fall League or 2020 Nationals, or consistently score 250+ points per game in NHBB events.

All bowl matches will be played following normal NHBB rules with a modified third quarter, where lightning rounds are played with bonus timing and immediate bouncebacks.

Nationals Qualification

Teams that have a winning record in preliminary play, or win a game in playoffs will qualify for the National Championships of the National History Bowl, which will be held later in 2021. Further information regarding the 2021 National Championships will be announced in the spring.

Awards

The top teams in each division will receive plaques which will be shipped after the event concludes.

History Bowl Regional team registrations will cost $100 per team, with the opportunity for a discount for teams that provide moderators (who would read for other teams, not their own, and subject to IAC’s discretion and approval). Winter Team vs Packet Events

Registrations for the Winter Online Bowl Team vs. Packet Event is also open, and will close February 28, 2021. The Spring Event will begin play in April 2021. Exact registration and competition dates for Spring have not yet been announced. If you have any questions please email league@iacompetitions.com.

Format

The Winter Team vs Packet event will take place from February 28 through April 1, 2021.

Teams will receive one packet a week every Sunday starting February 28. Teams will have a week to play the packet and report their scores, which will go on an online leaderboard. At the end, teams are invited to take part in an online match with another team to sample how our online Team vs Team events will take place.

Each packet will consist of 30 questions, powermarked so that correct answers will be worth 30, 20, or 10 points, depending on where in the question the correct answer was given.

PLEASE NOTE that you cannot sign up for both Team vs Team and Team vs Packet for Winter, as they use the same question sets.

Cost

History Bowl Team vs. Packet team registrations will cost $50 per team. Payments can be made in the form of a check or online with a credit card. Registration forms are posted below.
